Can the Glowforge Aura Cut Aluminum? Wattage, Metal Engraving, and Plasma Cutting Explained

Look, I don't design things. I buy the tools and make sure they don't become very expensive doorstops. I'm a procurement manager at a 15-person product development shop. We spend about $60,000 a year on equipment and materials, and I've tracked every invoice for the past seven years.

So when someone asked me, two weeks after we installed our Glowforge Aura, "Can it cut aluminum?" I didn't give a one-word answer. I asked which metal, which process, and what "cut" means. That annoyed them. It also saved us a costly mistake.

Search that phrase and you'll get a spec sheet. According to Glowforge's official product page, the Glowforge Aura Craft Laser™ cutting machine is a 40W CO2 laser. People interpret that as "strong enough" or "not strong enough" based on whatever forum thread they read. Both groups are usually wrong.

Wattage is the wrong number. Not because 40W doesn't matter, but because it only tells you one side of a four-part equation: wavelength, focus, speed, and material behavior.

Why "40W" doesn't mean what you think

Here's the thing: a 40W CO2 laser, a 40W diode laser, and a 40W fiber laser are described with the same number. They don't do the same jobs.

A CO2 laser emits around 10.6 micrometers. That wavelength is absorbed beautifully by wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and a lot of plastics. Bare aluminum reflects most of it, so a CO2 laser won't cut aluminum sheet.

A fiber laser emits around 1.06 micrometers. That wavelength is absorbed far better by metal. That's why a 30W fiber marker can engrave stainless steel while a 40W CO2 craft laser can't. Same wattage class. Different universe.

I know this sounds like an engineering lecture. But I've paid the tuition. When I compared a 40W CO2 desktop laser and a 30W fiber marker side by side at a supplier demo, I finally understood why wattage was the least useful spec on the page. Both machines were lasers. They did not overlap in materials.

Beam focus matters too. A 40W beam focused to a tight spot can mark coated metal. Spread that same beam, and it's just a heat gun. So "wattage" by itself doesn't tell you if the Aura can engrave a metal tumbler. The material's coating and the machine's optical path do.

What the Aura can and can't do with metal

Actually, I need to be careful here because "metal" includes anodized aluminum, coated stainless steel, raw steel, aluminum foil, and every alloy in between.

  • Anodized aluminum: Engraves. The laser removes the colored anodized layer, exposing the natural aluminum underneath.
  • Coated stainless steel tumblers: Engraves, often with a rotary attachment.
  • Bare aluminum sheet or plate: Does not cut. A CO2 laser at this wattage isn't the right tool.
  • Deeper metal engraving on hardened steel: Not the Aura's job. That's a CNC metal engraver or fiber laser territory.

The Aura is a craft laser. That's the product category. It's brilliant at wood, acrylic, leather, paper, cork, and similar materials. It's not a metal-cutting machine. You can use it to mark some metal surfaces that are engineered for laser marking, but you don't "cut aluminum" with it.

Can you plasma cut aluminum?

Yes. Plasma cutting can absolutely cut aluminum. It's a thermal process that uses electrically ionized gas to slice through conductive metal. It's a standard tool in metal fabrication shops for steel, stainless, and aluminum.

Can you do it with a Glowforge Aura? No. The Aura doesn't create a plasma arc. It creates a CO2 laser beam. Asking if it can plasma cut aluminum is like asking if our office copier can deburr a machined bracket. It's not a feature upgrade; it's a different machine.

If your business needs to cut aluminum angle or sheet for enclosures, a plasma cutter or a CNC router with the right spindle is the conversation. If you mostly need to engrave coated metal and cut wood, that's the Glowforge conversation. Don't let one viral video merge the two.

What this confusion actually costs

I've made my share of purchasing mistakes. It took me six years and about 30 equipment purchases to understand that a spec sheet tells you what a machine can do, not what it should do for your material mix.

When I audited our 2023 spending, I found that 11% of our tool budget went to machines that didn't match the materials we actually processed. The machines weren't defective. We bought them based on the wrong question.

  3. The thickness and finish of each material.

Then decide. Bare aluminum and steel? Look at a fiber laser or a CNC metal engraver. Wood, acrylic, and coated metal? A desktop CO2 laser like the Aura is a reasonable fit.

This is the customer education part, and I'm okay with it. I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining material compatibility than sell you something you'll outgrow. An informed customer asks better questions and ends up with fewer regrets. That's much easier for both sides.

There's something satisfying about getting that match right. After the spreadsheets, demos, and sample runs, when the Aura engraved the first coated aluminum piece cleanly, that was the payoff. It wasn't the number 40. It was buying the right tool for the materials we actually run.

So if someone asks "what's the Glowforge Aura wattage?", tell them the number. Then ask what they're trying to cut. That's where the real conversation starts.
