Glowforge Aura Craft Laser: A 7-Step Buyer & Safety Checklist I Wish I Had Earlier

I'm the person who buys new tools before reading the warnings. That's the personality type behind this checklist. I run a small laser engraving production team, and I've personally made and documented 14 costly mistakes—roughly $4,800 in wasted materials. The most humbling one happened in September 2024 with a batch of 32 engraved cutting boards. The preview looked perfect. The reality looked like a motivational poster from someone's smoke detector.

That failure changed how I think about every new laser. I now keep a pre-flight checklist for each machine, including our Glowforge Aura craft laser. This article is that list, in the order I'd actually do it. If you're thinking about buying an Aura or already running one for a small business, keep it handy. Before the checklist, let's deal with the most searched phrase: Glowforge Aura laser wattage. The current spec sheet for the Aura lists a 40W CO2 laser source. For a desktop craft laser, that's enough to handle wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and many other materials. It will not cut through 1/8-inch steel, and it's not meant to. The wattage buys you speed and depth, not superpowers.

1. Confirm your laser safety setup before unboxing

Laser engraver safety starts with the user, not the machine. In the United States, laser products fall under FDA rules in 21 CFR 1040.10. The Aura is marketed as a Class 1 laser product when fully assembled and closed. That's good to know, because it means the beam is supposed to be enclosed during normal operation. But that only works if you don't disable the interlock, don't remove the protective panels, and don't cut things that overheat unexpectedly.

Make a shop rule now: no open-lid runs, no modified safety switches, no 'quick looks' through the lid. If you're setting up a dedicated workshop area, ANSI Z136.1 is the industrial safety standard that covers laser hazard classifications. You don't need a full laser safety officer for a desktop machine, but you should know the basics.

2. Manage exhaust and smoke before your first burn

The Aura pulls smoke through an internal blower and out a rear exhaust port. On my first setup, I connected the hose in a hurry and forgot to check the seal. The workshop smelled of burnt acrylic for three weeks. Worse, I noticed later that a thin film of soot had settled on the shelf behind the machine. Cutting acrylic and resin creates decomposition gases you don't want lingering in your breathing air.

Route the exhaust outdoors if possible, or use a compatible air filtration system. Check the hose for kinks after moving the machine. And don't use the laser near a smoke detector if you'd rather not spend the weekend explaining to your landlord.

3. Run a material test before every serious job

This is the step I skipped on the cutting board batch. I'd spent an hour setting up the file, the vendor needed it the next day, and I told myself the preset was fine. It wasn't. The engraving layer was set to a score line instead of an engrave line, and the result was a gray, sooty halo around every word.

Use the Glowforge app's material presets as a starting point, not as a guarantee. Wood from different suppliers has different moisture, glue, and density. Even two boards from the same supplier can behave differently. Cut a small test square on every material you plan to use, and keep the successful settings in a notebook.

4. Inspect free laser engraving templates before you run them

Free laser engraving templates are a great way to build a catalog quickly. I've used dozens of free designs from the Glowforge design library and community forums. Some are excellent. Some have hidden issues, like extra layers left on 'cut' or tiny duplicate paths that cause a second pass where you don't want one.

Before pressing go, zoom into every corner of the design. Check which layer is set to engrave, which is score, and which is cut. Look for stray lines outside the boundaries. Then run a single sample on cheap material. This takes ten extra minutes and can prevent a whole batch from being ruined.

5. Know when the Aura is not the right machine

If your business is metal tags, steel tumblers, or 3D metal badges, a fiber laser is probably a better fit than a CO2 craft laser. A desktop fiber laser from an established fiber laser supplier will mark metal faster and more permanently. The Aura's CO2 laser, by contrast, is designed for organic materials and plastics. It can mark some coated metal items, but the range is limited.

I went back and forth between adding a fiber laser and adding another Aura to our shop. The decision came down to our product mix: signs, wood ornaments, and leather goods. The Aura was the right next tool. If our main product were stainless steel drinkware, I'd have called a fiber laser supplier for a demo before spending a cent.

6. Write down your settings like your money depends on it

Nobody remembers 'the perfect speed and power for that maple from the decent lumber store.' I have a shared spreadsheet with columns: material, thickness, supplier, Glowforge preset, power/speed overrides, and notes. It sounds like overkill until the third time you waste a sheet of 5mm acrylic trying to recreate what worked two weeks earlier.

Include photos if possible. A photo of the test result is worth a paragraph of vague notes like 'looked good, slightly smoky.'

7. Make 'never leave it running' part of your daily routine

This is the non-negotiable one. A desktop laser can sit there quietly and do nothing for 45 minutes, then hit a knot in the wood and flare up. I once stepped out for a quick phone call and came back to a small fire inside the machine. The enclosure and interlock contained it, but I don't want to know what would have happened if I'd gone to the store.

Stay near the machine. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher within reach. Check the job at least every few minutes. Some people set a timer as a reminder; I use the camera view from another room.

The craft laser market has changed. The basics haven't.

Five years ago, a 40W CO2 laser that you could set up on a sturdy table and control from a web app seemed futuristic. In 2025, that's exactly what the Glowforge Aura delivers. That is real progress.

But progress doesn't change the fundamentals: test your materials, respect the beam, manage the fumes, and never get comfortable. If you take one thing from this checklist, make it the material test. That single step would have saved me the most money, the most embarrassment, and a very sour batch of cutting boards.
