Glowforge Aura Craft Laser™ Cutting Machine: What It Cuts, What It Can't, and What to Do When a Deadline Hangs on It

Need a Glowforge Aura because a customer is waiting and you need to cut something today? Here's the honest version: The Glowforge Aura is a very capable desktop CO2 laser cutter and engraver for wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and marble tile—but it is not a universal material machine. It won't safely cut Styrofoam, it won't cut thick metals, and it will not laser weld. Knowing that before you buy saves you from a very expensive surprise at the worst possible moment.

I run a small production studio that handles custom laser work for event planners, shops, and makers. In the last two years alone I have processed over 180 rush laser jobs, and a good chunk of them could have gone sideways if we had trusted the wrong material claim. This is the guide I wish someone had given me before our first deadline panic.

Why You Can Trust This

In my role coordinating custom laser production, I have to decide in the first five minutes whether a job is physically possible. Not 'maybe possible.' Not 'hopefully possible.' Possible. For a rush order, there is no room for a material-testing surprise.

Last March, 36 hours before an awards dinner, an organizer asked for forty engraved marble place cards. We had one Glowforge Aura in the shop and no spare time. We ran a test on a scrap tile, dialed in the settings, and cut ten at a time. Delivered it with three hours to spare. The client's alternative was a monument shop that quoted $1,400 and couldn't guarantee next day. That experience reinforced something: a desktop laser is a lifesaver, but only when you respect its limits.

This is coming from experience, not a marketing page. I've also had the opposite experience—the time we tested a 'laser-friendly' foam that looked fine in a demo video until it turned into a melted, smoky mess. More on that below.

What the Glowforge Aura Craft Laser™ Cutting Machine Is Actually Good At

The Aura is designed as a connected desktop laser for small-batch production, not a factory workhorse. It has a camera, autofocus, and cloud-based design tools, which makes it drastically easier to use than the industrial units I learned on. For someone with a small business, that ease matters. Time doesn't.

The materials I trust it with most:

  • Wood (baltic birch, craft wood, bamboo)
  • Acrylic (up to about 3/8 inch, depending on formulation)
  • Leather and bonded leather
  • Cardstock, paper, and kraft board
  • Marble tile, slate, and some ceramics
  • Rubber stamp sheets, cork, and some safe foams like EVA

That's a wide range. But a wide range is still not everything.

The Aura doesn't cut all materials, and the ones it can't handle often fail in dangerous ways.

Styrofoam Laser Cutting: Please Don't

This one gets searched a lot, so let's be blunt: Do not cut Styrofoam in a Glowforge Aura. 'Styrofoam' usually means extruded polystyrene foam. When a CO2 laser hits polystyrene, it doesn't produce a clean edge—the plastic melts, creates hard beads, and releases fumes that aren't good for the machine or your lungs.

I learned this in the greasiest way possible. A trade show team needed custom-shaped packaging inserts printed on foam. We didn't have a formal material acceptance checklist when we started, so we tested a sample on the Aura. The laser cut through it, but the edge looked like a melted marshmallow, and the smell was enough to stop the whole workshop. We pulled the job, switched to die-cut EVA foam from a local shop, and made the deadline by one day. The third time a customer asked for Styrofoam, I finally added 'polystyrene, PVC, and vinyl' to a permanent no-go list. Should have done that after the first test.

If you need packaging foam, use a material that's actually rated for laser cutting. EVA foam, cork, and cardboard are good options. Polystyrene, PVC, and any material with chlorine or styrene content belong in the bin, not your laser.

Laser Engraving Marble: Yes, But Not How You Expect

Good news: the Glowforge Aura can engrave marble. It's one of my favorite ways to make a premium product on a deadline.

What does 'engrave marble' mean? The laser removes the surface layer of the stone, leaving a frosted white mark. It's a raster engraving process, not a cutting process. You won't cut through granite or create deep relief. You'll get a clean, durable surface marking that looks sharp on a place card, sign, or gift. That's enough for most customers.

For a rush job, here's what works for me:

  1. Use a scrap tile from the same batch for a test pass.
  2. Use the Glowforge preset for marble, then adjust based on that test.
  3. Run one piece first, check the contrast, then run the rest.
  4. Clean the dust and residue with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Don't soak the tile.

On the forty-piece rush job, we did one test pass, then let the Aura run in batches while we prepped packaging. That's the power of a tool that works without constant babysitting.

What About 'Laser Welding'?

If you typed 'how to laser weld' into a search engine, you probably got results showing a bright beam fusing metal. That is not what the Glowforge Aura does. The Glowforge Aura is not a laser welder, and no software update will make it one.

Laser welding uses high-power fiber or pulsed lasers to melt and join metals. The power levels, beam wavelength, and safety systems are completely different from a desktop CO2 laser designed to cut wood and acrylic. Trying to use a CO2 craft laser for welding won't fuse metal—it will create a hazard and likely damage the machine.

If your business actually needs to laser weld, you're looking at a purpose-built fiber laser welder, specialized PPE, ventilation, and training. That's a different budget, different learning curve, and a different risk profile. Know the difference between cutting, engraving, and welding before you buy.

What the Glowforge Aura Won't Do for You

I have mixed feelings about recommending any desktop laser as 'the' solution. On one hand, the Aura is the easiest laser system I've used when a client suddenly needs personalized products. On the other, it's still a CO2 machine with physical limits. Understanding those limits early is what saves you from missing a deadline.

Here are the boundaries that matter:

  • It won't cut thick metal or weld metal.
  • It won't safely process PVC, vinyl, or Styrofoam.
  • It won't do unlimited production volume—it's a desktop tool, not an industrial line.
  • It won't deliver a guaranteed result without material testing, no matter what anyone promises.

If a customer asks for something off that list, your move is to tell them before you test. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining why a material is unsafe than explain later why their order is ruined and the room stinks.

The Deadline Checklist

When you're using the Aura for a time-sensitive order, follow this.

  1. Test first, every time. New batch, new settings, new test tile.
  2. Check ventilation and smoke filtration. Even an enclosed laser creates airborne particles. ANSI Z136.1 gives the safety framework; your nose is a backup alert.
  3. Have a backup plan for the job. If the Aura goes down, will you outsource the cutting or change the material? Decide before 3 p.m.

That last one came from a painful lesson. We lost a small contract because we tried to save a hundred dollars on a standard rush-foam order instead of using the right material. The job arrived unfinished, and the customer cancelled. That's when we implemented a 'never skip the test' policy. The policy has made us slower in the test phase and faster overall.

Bottom Line, With Boundaries

If you're choosing a Glowforge Aura for a shop or craft business, it's a solid, easy-to-use starting point—provided you know what it can and can't do. It cuts wood and acrylic beautifully, it engraves marble nicely, and it does all of that through the craft laser™ design ecosystem that's genuinely fast to learn.

But it doesn't cut Styrofoam, it doesn't weld, and it doesn't replace an industrial laser. Those aren't flaws. They're design limits. Work within them, and the Aura becomes the machine that bails you out of a 36-hour deadline. Act like it can do everything, and you'll spend that same 36 hours scrubbing a melted mess out of the tray.

Know the limits, test the material, and keep the deadline. That's the job.
