I run a small fabrication studio. We do a lot of odd jobs—custom signage, event props, one-off prototypes. We picked up a Glowforge Aura six months ago, mostly for the speed side of things. But here’s the thing: I get calls from panicked small business owners at least once a week who bought a desktop laser and are now staring at a material stack they can’t cut. So. 1. Can the Glowforge Aura cut steel? Like, for a cnc laser cutter steel project?

But fiber lasers are a whole different investment: you need a chiller, a ventilation setup, and usually a dedicated 220V circuit. I bought a 30W fiber laser for my shop, and the installation costs alone were $1,200.

5. The laser engraver for wood ideas I see online—why don’t my results look like that?

The biggest factor? Prep. Everyone wants to just throw in a piece of plywood and hit start. You can do that, but you’ll get burnt edges and uneven depth. The pro trick: mask the surface with painter’s tape before engraving. It reduces charring and gives a cleaner cut. Also, the type of wood matters a ton. Poplar burns dark and uneven; maple holds detail well; birch plywood with no voids is the gold standard for engraved signs.
