Why Wattage Was the Wrong First Question for the Glowforge Aura Craft Laser

“Glowforge Aura craft laser.” That was the line item.

The customer-experience team at our company wanted an in-house way to make plaques, signs, and small acrylic gifts. The request arrived in the purchase queue with budget approved and a link to a video of a desktop machine cutting birch into ornaments. It looked easy. It looked fun. I was one click away from ordering it when an operations supervisor asked a question that changed my mind: “Can this engrave our stainless steel nameplates?” I said probably. I was wrong.

A little context: I’ve been the office administrator for a 55-person automation company since 2020. I manage purchasing and vendor relationships, so I’ve ordered everything from floor mats to torque wrenches. Lasers were not in my comfort zone. That should have been my first signal to slow down.

Wattage was my first rabbit hole

Like most buyers, I started with a search for “glowforge aura wattage.” The question is everywhere because wattage is the spec that seems easiest to compare. Higher number must mean better machine, right? Not exactly.

The question everyone asks is, “How many watts?” The question I should have asked first was, “What material is going under the beam?” Once I switched to that question, the whole purchase changed.

That’s when I made my second research mistake.

I typed “laser engraving ideas metal” at 10:30 p.m. and found endless beautiful photos: engraved pocket knives, steel tags, tumblers with monograms, metal business cards. Every image looked like the answer. None of the galleries told me which machine was behind the shot.

The call that changed the purchase order

I called a laser weld supplier from our vendor list. We hadn’t used them for laser work before—they’d quoted us on a fixture repair in 2023—but they knew metal fabrication. I introduced myself and said, “We’re looking at a desktop craft laser. Can it mark our stainless ID tags?”

To be fair, the Aura does have material settings for metal-friendly blanks. An anodized aluminum bottle or a coated stainless keychain is not the same as a raw steel inspection tag.

The purchase order I finally wrote

We paused the Glowforge Aura order for two weeks while operations sent a sample batch of steel tags to a local shop with a fiber marking machine. The result was readable, durable, and less expensive than adding an in-house fiber laser to our maintenance schedule. Then I went back to the customer-experience budget and approved the Aura for the jobs it was actually good at: wood plaques, acrylic signage, leather keychains, and custom decorations.

In the end, we bought two solutions instead of one. That sounds less efficient, but it’s more honest.

I also changed my approval process. Every internal request for a “laser” now has to include the material, the quantity, and the desired outcome before I click send. (Should mention: the extra questions did not make me the most popular person in the office. They did stop at least one expensive mistake.)

I still kick myself for how long that phone call took. If I had asked for a material list before watching the video, we would have saved two weeks. But the fix was simple: ask, don’t assume.

What I’d tell any buyer

Would I recommend the Glowforge Aura craft laser? Yes—for craft projects. If your work is wood, acrylic, leather, and similar materials, it can be an easy-to-manage addition. We use ours in the customer-experience department, and the first batch of engraved walnut awards came out looking sharp.

But if a colleague asked me to source a machine for metal serial tags, I’d send them to a marking laser machine integrator or a contract metal marking shop. The Aura would not be my choice.

There is no single “best laser.” There’s the right wavelength and material match, and everything else is marketing. Honest vendors will say “this tool isn’t for that job.” When they do, listen.

Bottom line: Don’t start with glowforge aura wattage. Start with your material list. Write it down. Show it to the people who know the difference. Then buy the machine that matches, not the one that impresses.

And if someone above you says “it should handle both,” ask to see a sample first. Samples don’t have opinions. They just show the truth.
