If you're comparing laser engraving machines for beginners, you've probably run into two categories: desktop CO2 lasers like the Glowforge Aura, and fiber laser cutting or marking machines. They look similar in product photos, and both can "engrave." But they are not interchangeable.

The Glowforge Aura does not cut thick metal, and I won't pretend otherwise. If someone needs serious metal cutting, I'd recommend a fiber laser — or for thicker plates, a multi-kW system, which is a different world. I'm not a metal fabrication expert, so I'd consult a specialist for that.

I went back and forth between the Aura and a fiber laser for weeks before buying. On paper, the fiber laser made sense: higher wattage, lower upfront cost, more "industrial." But my gut said I'd never use it for the products I actually sell. My gut was right.
