The Shortcut to a Good Decision: Know Your Situation
If you're looking into the Glowforge Aura – the newest desktop CO₂ laser engraver/cutter from Glowforge – you've probably seen a ton of reviews. Some say it's the best thing since sliced bread. Others say it's too limited. Honestly, both are right depending on your context.
I manage purchasing for a mid-sized company – roughly $150K annually across maybe 8 vendors. When my boss asked me to evaluate the Glowforge Aura for our internal prototyping and occasional engraved gifts, I had to figure out: is this thing actually useful for us? But they cost $5,000-$15,000+ and have a steeper learning curve. For non-metal materials like acrylic and wood, a CO₂ laser like the Aura produces a cleaner cut edge – actually, the Aura's edge quality on acrylic was way better than I expected.
So here's the trade-off. The Glowforge Aura can handle most of what a small prototyping shop needs: up to ¼" acrylic (good for display stands), ¼" plywood (for jigs and fixtures), and ⅛" hardwood. The bed is 12" x 20" – big enough for many projects, but you can't do a full sheet of material in one pass. If you're regularly cutting larger parts, you'd need to tile them or upgrade to a bigger machine (Glowforge's Pro or a commercial laser).
One drawback I noticed: the Aura uses a 40W CO₂ laser tube. That's enough for most desktop projects, but if you're hoping to cut thick materials quickly (like ½" plywood), it'll be slow – multiple passes and significant burning on edges. For production speed, you probably want a 60W or 80W system. The Aura is more of a prototyping machine than a production workhorse.

I ignored a friend's advice about verifying material compatibility with new suppliers. We bought a batch of acrylic from a cheaper online vendor – thought "acrylic is acrylic, right?" Under 10? The Aura's speed is fine. 50+ per day? You'll want a faster, higher-power machine (or multiple Auras). - How important is ease of use?
If you have a dedicated operator who can learn complicated software, many cheaper laser cuters exist (but they'll require manual focus, air assist setup, etc.). If you want a plug-and-play experience for a non-technical team, the Aura's cloud-based simplicity is a genuine advantage. - Do you need to engrave large metal items (like metal awards)?
The Aura can engrave coated metals with a spray. For bare metal engraving (no coating), you'd need a fiber laser or a rotary attachment with a CO₂ laser + marking compound – but that's messy. If this is a major use case, look at fiber options instead.
Bottom line: the Glowforge Aura is not a universal solution. But for the scenarios I outlined above – creative studios, education, and light prototyping – it's arguably the best desktop laser in its class for non-metal work, especially if you value time-to-first-print and a huge ecosystem of free designs. Just don't expect it to cut steel or handle production volumes.
